Employment Opportunities

In the dynamic field of aviation, licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (AMEs) play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and reliability of aircraft. If you're an AME, your expertise is highly sought after by leading aviation companies worldwide.

As per the Indian Aircraft Act, 1934, and the rules made thereunder, the release of Indian Registered Aircraft for flying is mandated after certification by a licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer, as licensed by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). An AME certifies that an aircraft is airworthy and safe for flying before any flight can take place. Individuals aspiring to obtain an AME licence need to undergo a licensing program as per DGCA regulations.

Even if you hold a BSc, BE/B.Tech, ME/M.Tech, or PhD in Aviation / Aeronautical / Aerospace, certification of any Indian registered aircraft requires licensing by the DGCA, as per regulation (CAR-66). Only a licensed AME can certify an aircraft for airworthiness and safety.

A licensed AME can certify:

  • Large aircraft operated by airlines.

Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer

Why should you choose a career in aviation in India?

A rising proportion of middle-income households, healthy competition among Low-Cost Carriers, infrastructure buildup at leading airports, and a supportive policy framework have given a positive push to the aviation sector. The civil aviation industry in India has emerged as one of the fastest-growing industries in the country during the last three years and can be broadly classified into scheduled air transport service, which includes domestic and international airlines, non-scheduled air transport service consisting of charter operators and air taxi operators, and air cargo service, which includes air transportation of cargo and mail.

Domestic traffic contributes around 69% of the total airline traffic in South Asia, and India’s airport capacity is expected to handle 1 billion trips annually by 2023. The Indian aviation industry has fully recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic shock, as indicated by the air traffic movement, which stood at 327.28 million in FY23 compared to 188.89 million in FY22. India has become the third-largest domestic aviation market in the world and is expected to overtake the UK to become the third-largest air passenger market by 2025.

Currently, the country has 149 operational airports, including 137 airports, 2 water aerodromes, and 9 heliports. Among them, there are 29 international, 92 domestic, and 10 custom airports. To meet the growing demand for air travel in India, it has become imperative to increase the capacity of airport infrastructure.

To augment airport infrastructure, the government aims to develop 100 airports by 2025 under the UDAN Scheme. To date, 76 airports have been developed. More than 2.15 lakh UDAN flights have operated, and over 11 million passengers have availed the benefits of UDAN flights so far. This will increase the demand for aviation professionals as airports can't function without AMEs, ground staff, and other aviation professionals.

The projected upsurge in air travel in India would require more aircraft usage, further igniting the demand for Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul (MRO) services. The Indian Civil Aviation MRO market, at present, stands at around $900 million and is anticipated to grow to $4.33 billion by 2025, increasing at a CAGR of about 14-15%.

Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (AMEs) play a central role in providing these services. AMEs are licensed professionals responsible for inspecting, repairing, and maintaining aircraft to meet regulatory standards and ensure safe operation. MRO services must comply with aviation regulations set by authorities such as DGCA. MRO facilities must employ AMEs as per rules also.

Up to 100% FDI is permitted in MRO for maintenance and repair organisations, flying training institutes, and technical training institutes under the automatic route. This will increase the number of MROs in the country.

Due to the rise in demand for air travel, India will need 2,380 new commercial aeroplanes by 2038. According to a report titled ‘Travel market in India’, published by RedCore - a RedSeer unit focusing on early-stage companies - the travel market in India, worth ~US$ 75 billion in FY20, is projected to cross US$ 125 billion by FY27.

According to data from Boeing's Current Market Outlook (CMO) and Airbus' Global Market Forecast (GMF), India has consistently shown strong demand for new aircraft over the past decade. For example, in Boeing's CMO 2021, India was projected to require 2,230 new aeroplanes over the next 20 years, worth $320 billion. Similarly, Airbus' GMF 2020 predicted India's need for over 1,700 new passenger and freighter aircraft by 2039. These projections highlight the anticipated growth in demand for AMEs, Pilots, and Air Hostesses.

The Regional Connectivity Scheme or UDAN (‘Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik’) scheme plans to enhance connectivity to India's unserved and under-served airports and envisages making air travel affordable and widespread. More than 2.15 lakh UDAN flights have operated, and over 11 million passengers have availed the benefits of UDAN flights as of November 30, 2022. The Government has set a target to operationalize 1,000 UDAN routes and to revive/develop 100 unserved & underserved airports/heliports/water aerodromes (including 68 aerodromes) by 2025.

Do you know?

An aircraft is combination of millions of pieces of components including mechanical and electrical which makes the machine airworthy while maintaining the safety of the passengers and crew onboard. In India, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) mandates that Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (AMEs) obtain a licence to uphold the highest safety standards in the aviation sector.
